A Memoir
A Memoir of Courage, Healing, and Reclaiming My Life
Everyone always told me I was the strong one. No one saw that I was drowning.
You were never looking for the one. The one was always you.
Inside the book
I learned to survive early. I lost my father at eleven, buried my first love far too young, and raised my daughters with no one beside me. I married, I divorced, I built a business out of nothing. By the time a charming stranger walked into my life, I was sure I had already lived through the worst of it.
For six months he was everything I thought I wanted — he liked everything I liked, finished my sentences, called me his twin. Then the mask came off and the real man stepped out, and he set out to take it all: my money, my children, my home, my name, my mind. Slowly. Quietly. One inch at a time, until I could barely see it happening.
No one rescued me. I saved myself the only way I knew how — I put on my sneakers and I walked. Morning after morning, mile after mile, until the walking became prayer, the prayer became a plan, and the plan became my way out.
If you are drowning while the world keeps calling you strong, I wrote this for you. There is a whole life on the other side of fear, and I walk in it every single day.
From the Prologue
I started walking because it was the one place he couldn't follow me.
Inside the house, everything was watched — my phone, my face, where I went, who I spoke to, how long I was gone. But exercise he understood. A woman wanting to walk off some weight and get some air, that he allowed. So I would put on my sneakers and go, and for the first time in a long while, nobody knew exactly where I was.
That is where I did my thinking. That is where I planned. Every move I ever made to get my life back, I worked out somewhere along those miles, talking to myself and to God and to nobody at all. I called it walking away free.
